About the Project

The National High Altitude Training Centre in Kapchorwa, Uganda, is a government-funded sports development project designed to foster high-performance training and support the long-term development of the country’s sports sector.

Located in eastern Uganda, the centre sits in a mountainous high-altitude environment that is well suited for endurance training. The region has long been associated with elite athletics development and provides favourable conditions for athletes preparing for international competition.

Developing a modern training facility in such a mountainous area also required significant effort during construction. According to the project team, new access roads were built to reach the site, highlighting the determination behind establishing a high-performance sports centre in the region.

A Dual-Certified Field for Football and Rugby

At the heart of the training centre is a professional artificial turf field designed to support both football and rugby.

The field has achieved certification from both FIFA and World Rugby, confirming that it meets internationally recognised requirements for surface performance, player safety, and durability. Together, these certifications ensure that the playing surface delivers reliable ball behaviour, appropriate traction, and effective impact protection for players.

This dual certification enables the field to support both football and rugby on the same surface while maintaining the performance expectations of each sport, enhancing the training centre’s ability to host high-level training and sporting activities.
