Choose the Perfect Type of Artificial Hockey Pitch
for Your Facility
During much of the 20th century, field hockey was played on natural grass fields. However, in 1976, the sport was transformed when an elite-level hockey competition was played on synthetic turf surface for the first time. Today, artificial turf— specifically designed for hockey pitch—has propelled the sport to new heights of speed, skill, and excitement.
The three primary types of artificial hockey pitches are water-based, sand-dressed, and sand-filled. The main differences among these surfaces lie in their turf structure, pile height, and infill characteristics. We will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the unique features and benefits of each type of field hockey pitch type, enabling you to choose the ideal pitch for your facility.
Water based field hockey field
Water-based hockey fields are designed for the highest level of play and are the standard for international competitions such as the Olympics and the FIH World Cup. These surfaces are made of dense, short, curly monofilament turf with no infill, irrigated with water to reduce friction and enhance ball speed and control.
Water-based pitches can achieve FIH Global or FIH Global Elite certification, offering an ideal surface for elite athletes to perform advanced techniques with optimal safety, consistency, and speed.
Sand dressed field hockey pitch
Sand-dressed hockey pitches are the most widely used surface type, suitable for clubs, schools, and regional competitions. These fields feature a dense turf structure partially filled with sand, which supports the fibers while keeping most of the sand hidden from view. The pile height is slightly higher than that of water-based systems but lower than sand-filled.
Offering excellent playability with lower maintenance and minimal water use, sand-dressed fields can meet FIH National standards and are a cost-effective alternative to water-based systems.
Sand filled field hockey field
Similar to a sand-dressed field, a sand-filled pitch uses sand as the infill material. The difference is that sand-filled hockey pitches are made of less, longer fibers and more sand, leading to a relatively slower ball roll. While less common in modern hockey-specific installations, these pitches are still widely used in multi-sport environments due to their affordability.
For communities and educational institutions, sand-filled pitches are the most budget-friendly option among the three types we offer.
