No elevated health risk found from artificial turf

A new study of artificial grass fields containing crumb rubber infill conducted by four state agencies shows that health risks are not elevated from playing on the fields. Two such synthetic turf fields have been investigated: Tom Fujitani Field at Memorial Stadium and Kristine Lilly Field on the north side of the campus.

Artificial turf has become increasingly popular in the UK, with firms reporting a huge spike in sales, amounting to a 35 per cent increase over the same period a year ago. Industry analysts argue that there are several factors which have led to the increased demand of synthetic grass, the most notable of which is that it does not require maintenance such as weekly mowing.

Blatter: Artificial turf is the future

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter is a supporter of artificial turf and believes that one day every country will convert to playing on synthetic surfaces. His sentiments have been endorsed by the German Sport University of Cologne, who reached the conclusion that "well maintained artificial turf has no measurable effect on the game."

PEs are cheap, flexible, durable, and chemically resistant. LDPE is used to make films and packaging materials, while HDPE is used for containers, plumbing, and automotive fittings. While PE has low resistance to chemical attack, it was found later that a PE container could be made much more robust by exposing it to fluorine gas, which modified the surface layer of the container into the much tougher polyfluoroethylene.
